Sara Koenig PNP

Sara is a life-long Bay Area resident. She was born in San Francisco and raised in Mill Valley, spending her childhood in the shadow of Mount Tam. College was also close by, down the coast to UC Santa Cruz, to earn a degree in Sociology.

Sara's nursing path started years ago when a close friend passed away from cancer. She realized through that experience that she wanted to work in healthcare. She got a job working at UCSF as a clinical trials coordinator in Pediatric Oncology. It was there that Sara met two wonderful nurse practitioners, who, in her eyes, had mastered the art of blending medical knowledge with a compassionate human touch. They soon became her mentors, and she started going to night school to complete the prerequisites for nursing school. During her years at UCSF, Sara also spent time volunteering in the Child Life Department helping chronically and acutely ill children manage their illnesses through play therapy.

After three long years of working and going to school at night, Sara left the Bay Area for New Haven, CT, and earned her RN and MSN from Yale. To add to the challenges of graduate school, she got pregnant after the first year of the program, gave birth two days after final exams of her second year, and had an infant for the remainder of her education. The challenges of breastfeeding, lack of sleep, and the illnesses and hospitalizations she encountered in her son's first year added to the experience and made her a better clinician.

After graduating, the strong pull of friends and family (and the 70 degree February weather) enticed her back to the Bay Area. She has worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner in the East Bay, Sonoma, and now Marin. Sara lives in San Rafael with her husband and two energetic young sons. When not working, Sara enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, exploring the beautiful surroundings of the Bay Area, and, when life allows, doing yoga.
